The Netherlands is not a country that is known for its snowfall. In fact, snow is so rare in the Netherlands that when it does fall, it causes widespread panic and chaos (especially in public transport). This was the case in February 2017, when a cold snap hit the Netherlands and brought with it the country’s heaviest snowfall in years. The snow also caused some problems, but overall the Netherlands seemed to take the snow in stride. The resulting video of the event is incredible.
The snow may have been a surprise to the Netherlands, but it was actually part of a larger pattern of unusual weather across Europe. In the weeks before the snowfall, Europe had been dealing with a heatwave that broke temperature records in several countries. Then, after the snowfall, temperatures in the Netherlands rose to summer-like levels.
This pattern of extreme weather is likely to become more common in the future as the planet continues to warm. As the climate changes, we can expect to see more extreme weather events, including heatwaves, droughts, and floods.
